The molecules of cars in long bacillic chains
are breathed into the lungs of Reading
each morning, where, tubercular, they meditate the day.
From space they seem the active force
that drives the growth, the gentle acid rain,
with their pale and microscopic mites hitch-hiking
parasitic riders going there perhaps to feed, or play.
